Sussex County Celebrates the Opening of New Outdoor Fitness Center at SCCC

SCCC Fitness Court Ribbon CuttingNEWTON, N.J. – The Sussex County Board of County Commissioners is excited to collaborate with Sussex County Community College (SCCC) on the creation of an outdoor fitness center designed to promote health, wellness, and physical activity throughout the community.

The Sussex County Division of Senior Services has a long history of partnering with SCCC to provide programs and services that benefit older adults. The creation of this Fitness Center grew out of collaborative discussions focused on identifying new opportunities to support the health and well-being of county employees and community members.

Commissioner Carney shared his enthusiasm for the project:

“I have been advocating for fitness programs for county employees and our community. When I learned about the National Fitness Campaign, I immediately brought the opportunity to Deputy County Administrator Lorraine Hentz, who partnered with SCCC President Corey Homer to help bring this vision to life. With the rising cost of health insurance, this is one proactive step we can take to help control costs while investing in the health and wellness of our employees and residents. I commend Corey Homer for his leadership and continued efforts to meet the needs of our community.”

Sussex County plans to promote the use of the Fitness Center among county employees, encouraging them to take advantage of the preventive wellness benefits offered through their health insurance. By making fitness more accessible, the County hopes to encourage healthy habits, support preventive care, and contribute to long-term employee wellness.

Open to students, employees, and the community, the Fitness Center is designed for individuals ages 14 and older and features exercises that can be adapted to a variety of abilities and fitness levels. Visitors can also download the free Fitness Court® App for guided workouts, instructional videos, fitness challenges, and more. In addition, the Sussex County Division of Senior Services will be coordinating outdoor fitness classes for older adults beginning in the spring of 2027.

This partnership demonstrates what can be accomplished when county government and community institutions work together toward a shared goal. By investing in accessible fitness opportunities, Sussex County and SCCC are helping build a healthier, stronger, and more connected community.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this new facility and the programs it will support for years to come!
